Memory & Performance

If you saw a memory warning from FloWords, you’re in the right place. This guide explains how FloWords uses your Mac’s resources and how to optimize for smooth performance.

During transcription, FloWords loads the AI model into your Mac’s RAM. Each model has different memory and accuracy characteristics.

ModelDownload SizeRAM UsageAccuracy
Whisper Turbo547 MB~2 GB~93%
Parakeet V3640 MB~2 GB~94%
Apple SpeechNo downloadMinimal~92%

The app itself uses an additional 200-500 MB for processing and interface.

Transcription is CPU-intensive during processing:

  • Apple Silicon Macs process significantly faster than Intel
  • Processing happens in short bursts during recording
  • Larger models require more CPU time
  • Real-time factor varies by model and Mac

FloWords stores files in your Library folder:

  1. Open Activity Monitor (⌘ + Space, search “Activity Monitor”)
  2. Click the Memory tab at the top
  3. Check Memory Pressure graph at bottom
  4. Find FloWords in the process list

Interpreting Memory Pressure:

  • Green: Plenty of available RAM
  • Yellow: Memory getting tight
  • Red: Critical—close apps immediately

FloWords monitors your system and warns you when memory is low to prevent performance issues.

Recommended: Apple Speech

  • Minimal RAM usage (native to macOS)
  • Fast transcription
  • Good for quick notes
  • Works on any Mac

To switch:

  1. Open Settings (⌘,)
  2. Go to Model tab
  3. Select Apple Speech
  4. Start recording to test

Free up memory by closing apps you’re not actively using:

  1. Open Activity Monitor (⌘ + Space)
  2. Click Memory tab
  3. Sort by Memory column (click header)
  4. Close memory-heavy apps you’re not using
  5. Retry transcription in FloWords

Apps that typically consume lots of RAM:

  • Web browsers with many tabs (Chrome, Safari)
  • Creative software (Photoshop, Final Cut Pro)
  • Virtual machines (Parallels, VMware)
  • Communication apps (Slack, Teams, Discord)

Cloud models run on remote servers—zero RAM usage on your Mac:

  • Groq Whisper Large v3 Turbo - Fast, free tier available
  • Google Gemini 2.5 Flash - Very fast, free tier
  • ElevenLabs Scribe v2 - Best accuracy (paid)
  • Deepgram Nova-3 - Real-time streaming (paid)
  • OpenAI GPT-4o Transcribe - Excellent quality (paid)

8 GB RAM or Less

Best models for your Mac:

  • Apple Speech (minimal)
  • Parakeet V3 (~2 GB)
  • Whisper Turbo (~2 GB)

16 GB RAM

Recommended for best balance:

  • Whisper Turbo (recommended)
  • Parakeet V3 (fast, accurate)
  • Cloud models for heavy work

32 GB+ RAM

Use any model freely:

  • Whisper Turbo for best quality
  • Multiple models installed
  • No memory constraints

Cloud-Only

Regardless of your RAM:

  • Groq, Gemini, ElevenLabs
  • Zero local memory usage
  • Requires internet

When to consider upgrading:

  • Frequent memory warnings with basic models
  • Need consistently maximum accuracy
  • Heavy multitasking while transcribing
  • Other apps regularly slow down

Apple Silicon Macs (M1/M2/M3/M4):

  • RAM not upgradeable after purchase
  • Consider trading in for higher RAM configuration
  • Cloud models are excellent alternative

Intel Macs:

  • Some models support RAM upgrades
  • Check EveryMac.com for your model’s compatibility
  • Typical upgrade cost: $50-200 for 8-16 GB

While this doesn’t affect RAM during transcription, keeping your Mac clean helps overall performance:

  1. Open Settings (⌘,)
  2. Go to General tab
  3. Under History Retention, choose cleanup period
  4. Enable Auto-delete audio files

FloWords monitors your available RAM and shows warnings when necessary:

StatusAvailable RAMWhat You’ll See
Healthy> 3 GBNo warnings, smooth performance
Moderate2-3 GBNo warnings, large models may slow
Low1-2 GBWarning notification appears
Critical< 1 GBStrong warning, may crash

When Low or Critical:

  • Switch to Apple Speech or Parakeet V3
  • Close unused applications immediately
  • Try cloud models instead
  • Restart FloWords if needed

When Moderate:

  • Use Apple Speech if memory is very low
  • Use Parakeet V3 or Whisper Turbo for best performance
  • Monitor memory if running long transcription sessions
  • Consider closing browser tabs
